San Jose de Ancomarca, Peru. March 2016.

Welcome to Dey of the Phoenix, the official web site of  Mey Hasbrook launched in 2008! I’m an interdisciplinary artist and community organizer.  My artistic work spans the  literary, performance, and visual arts.

.  .  .  building bridges  .  .  .
Since 2006, I have developed socially-conscious collaborations with artists and agencies.  My creative career began as a performance poet in Lansing, Michigan, and many of my programs have served women and survivors of violence. La Puenta is my current focus: a project bridging sustainable arts with women in Peru and Michigan.

.  .  .  engaging communities  .  .  .
My home base is Kalamazoo, Michigan since 2013, where I have held annual exhibitions at Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative.  Meanwhile, I continue organizing community-arts events in my hometown area of Greater Lansing, like the forthcoming Be Beauty open-mic series at the Robin Theatre.  Additionally since 2014, my annual trips to Peru have included artist residencies and exhibitions.

.  .  .  inspiration & spiritual practice  .  .  .
Spiritual practice is integral to my inspiration for particular art works and also designing projects in service of community.  I honor the Earth and ancestors as a mixed-blood of Cherokee-Celtic/Irish descent, and have practiced Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends) since 2007. My ministry La Puenta integrates the creation of art while serving communities of Michigan and Peru. I gratefully receives support from a committee at Kalamazoo Friends Meeting.
