Embodied writing draws upon life stories of gender expression, cultural survival, healing from violence, dis/abilities, spiritual activism, and more. This theme is explored in the essay of the late Gloria E. Anzaldúa titled “now let us shift . . . the path of conocimiento . . . inner work, public acts”, which is an inspiration for Embodying Our Words. Anzaldúa writes, “If el conocimiento that body is both spirit and matter intertwined is the solution [to the Cartesian split], it’s one difficult to live out, requiring that this knowledge be lived daily in embodied ways. Only then may the split be healed.” From this starting point, the program explores embodied writing as a creative process spanning one’s inner life and community spaces. Lansing-area locations for the essay are available online http://deyofthephoenix.com/herstories.
