Art and Activism Unite at Bridges Open Mic

Lansing, Michigan – November 21, 2011. The HerStories Project presents Bridges Open Mic, a written and spoken-word event, on November 22, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles Street, East Lansing, Michigan. The program bridges Transgender Day of Remembrance (Nov. 20) and the international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (Nov. 25 – Dec. 10). Lesbian poet Bobbi Byrd (“Seasons of the Soul”) features. An MSU Vagina Monologues cast member makes a special appearance. Guests include Lee Sayles (Women in the Arts Festival), Jan de la Torre (Pulse of Kalamazoo), Drew Prosch-Jensen (Fowlerville, MI), Max D (East Lansing, MI), and Lauren Spencer (MSU LBGT Resource Center). The program is co-emceed by community organizer Jeffrey Franckowiak and poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook (“Circle…Home”).

Bridges Open Mic celebrates gender expression; challenges militarism and gender violence; and honors Trans gender and Two Spirit voices. Registration is available by email herstories.project@gmail.com. Walk-ins may sign-up to participate at the event, though there are limited slots. The cover is $3. Partners include Capital Area Response Effort (C.A.R.E), Center for Poetry (RCAH at MSU), MSU Amnesty International, MSU LBGT Resource Center, MSU Sexual Assault Program, NorthStar Center, and the Peace Education Center. The program celebrates gender expression; challenges militarism and gender violence; and honors Trans gender and Two Spirit voices. The event features lesbian poet Bobbi Byrd from Osseo, Michigan. Emcees are community organizer-advocate Jeffrey Franckowiak and poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook.
