HerStories Fest Celebrates Women

Lansing, Michigan – March 10, 2011. HerStories Fest on March 18 celebrates stories about women during Women’s History Month. Donations benefit the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing, which to date has served over 2800 people. The program begins at 6:30pm with a free reception at Everybody Reads Bookstore, 2019 E. Michigan Ave, followed by Word Art at 7:00pm – a free performance of poetry, storytelling, and music. At 8:00pm, a benefit concert with food buffet takes place at Gone Wired Cafe, 2021 E. Michigan Ave. Suggested donation for the concert is $10, with additional donation for the buffet. Also offered is a silent auction with early bidding the week prior at event locations. Advanced donations of $20 for the concert-buffet combination qualifies donors for a raffle prize of $100 in gift certificates. Program updates are available at http://deyofthephoenix.com/herstories. HerStories Fest is part of The HerStories Project, which provides community-based programs celebrating stories about women and gender expression. The Benefit Concert features Mighty Medicine and opera singer Marco Guzmán. The buffet is prepared by Chef Cecilia Garcia, formerly co-owner of Mama Bear’s Cafe. Word Art guests include poets Silvana Alfaro, Nancy Allen, and Tamera Nielsen; writer-activist Melanie Morrison (Allies for Change); singer-ethnographer Sandra Cade (Intercultural Communications); and spoken word by Laurie Hollinger (Center for Poetry), “Midnight” Rose Cooper (MSU Slam Poetry Team), and Melissa Dey Hasbrook. Sponsors include East Lansing Food Co-op, Foods for Living, Paramount Coffee, Bake N’ Cakes, and many more local businesses.
